OPEN ARCHIVE #2 PROGRAM

EXHIBITIONS
The group show Walking the Hinterland considers the ways in which contemporary art responds to geographical non-spaces. Frank Theys’ newly restored installation Oratorium for prepared video player and eight monitors (1989) creates a spiritual space in which ritual and alienation meet.
OPENING NIGHT - OPEN ARCHIVE #2
Join us for the opening night of Open Archive #2! Come to the official opening of the exhibition Walking the Hinterland and listen and dance to Mono Fucks Dolby Surround, a new performance piece by Messieurs Delmotte and his Jukebox Recorded Orchestra. And, of course, meet the artists and the Argos team for a drink and a cosy chat in our newly restyled bar area.
THEMATIC SERIES - SCREENINGS
The curators of Argos examined the entire archive of more than 2500 titles. Making a transversal movement, they discovered dozens of substantive lines and formal directions which connect artists and works with each other. Twelve Thematic Series focus on developments and events which occur on a much larger social scale than in the arena of visual arts and media
ARGOS MEDIA LIBRARY
Take a look at the collection in our Media Library, and feel free to leaf through catalogues, theoretical works, artists’ books and current subscriptions to twenty art magazines. Argos Media Library, the heart of the centre, is constantly expanding
ARCHIVE MATTERS – CASE STUDIES
Three evenings broach important questions concerning the practice of conserving and archiving audiovisual art. Frank Theys’ 1989 work Oratorium for Prepared Video Player and Eight Monitors is a first case study; while the artists Ronny Heiremans & Katleen Vermeir and Pieter Geenen speak about their experiences in an experimental research project
ARTIST IN FOCUS - SCREENINGS
Six programs focus on artists from the Argos collection who have drawn our attention over the last couple of years for various reasons. Artist in Focus allows to view and compare their works side by side on the big screen. The Argos archive contains audiovisual works by more than two hundred artists
A CLOSER LOOK – LECTURES AND DISCUSSIONS BY/ ABOUT ARTISTS
This lecture and debate series further investigates the work of the artists Jef Cornelis, Alexander Kluge, Angel Vergara Santiago and Jayce Salloum - artists who appear prominently in the Argos collection. Either the artists speak for themselves or lectures address aspects of their work
MEDIA, MEMORY, HISTORY - CURATORIAL LECTURE SERIES
On six evenings, curators will, on the basis of their own practice and/or research, speak about how the culture of memory and historicity can make a fundamental contribution to supporting critical strategies in the arts. In the arts, there is at present a striking interest in the past, in history and historical events
EXTRA LENGTH - SCREENINGS
Five works from the Argos collection in which the duration is inherently linked to the subject. Each title represents an individual approach and logic that has nothing to do with the pyramidal structure of two plot-lines and a denouement in the traditional feature film. The extreme duration of these five works is perfectly suited to their form. Haste and speed set the tone in our society
ECRAN D'ART - SCREENINGS
Cinéma Arenberg host two evenings that present artists whose bodies of work were recently acquisited in the Argos collection: the duo Libia Castro and Ólafur Ólafsson and Erik Bünger
ALGA MARGHEN – RECORD LABEL PRESENTATION & PERFORMANCES
Established in 1996, the Alga Marghen Label specialises in twentieth-century composers, avant-garde artists and ‘experimental historical obscurities and outsiders’. Argos archived the catalogue of the label, and hosts a talk. In Bozar there is a performance evening scheduled featuring artists from the label
